The play is set in 1956 at the annual meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society of the Gertrude Stein Sisterhood, gathered in a church basement to host their quiche competition. These women adore quiche. They love quiche more than anyone in the history of the world has ever loved quiche. “No men, no meat, just good manners” is their motto. However, when a nuclear explosion devastates the outside world, the long-awaited competition is interrupted, and the heroines are forced to confront their secrets and sexual identities.

What People Said

“What performances, what movement, what humour, what an intelligent expression of the absurd without ever losing the thread! Congratulations, Evita, and to your immensely talented actresses… I am still laughing when I think about the production and would gladly see it again. The scene in which the lesbians are ecstatically worshipping the quiche under the founder’s gaze is a monument of choreographic precision.”

“The play successfully and effortlessly immersed us in its atmosphere, making us part of the action. The female voice emerges powerful and resonant, reaching into the depths of the soul, posing questions, overturning assumptions, and challenging patriarchal norms.”

“Ioannou, as in her previous works, remains in close proximity to her material-both textual and human. She is not interested in crafting beautiful images but is drawn to the emotional force of ‘dirty’ situations where the actors’ bodies matter more than words… With this well-written yet non-generic anarchic comedy, she seems to have found her element. Her attention to detail-in gestures and movement-gave the production a sweeping rhythm through to its triumphant finale.”

“At a time when gender and sexuality issues began to be addressed in performances that identified themselves as social, Evita Ioannou saved the theater. She tore apart singularity and restored duality… The translation achieved a lot. So did the direction: organic.
